Weight loss injections (Mounjaro, WeGovy) and the NHS
💊 What’s New?
Two new weight loss medicines — Wegovy® and Mounjaro® — are now available on the NHS in South East London.
However, only a small number of patients are currently eligible. This is due to limited stocks of medicines.
We hope, in time, more patients will be able to get these on the NHS.
👥 Who Can Get These Medicines?
You must meet certain health rules:
1️⃣ You may qualify if:
- Your BMI is 40+ (or 37.5+ for some ethnic groups like South Asian, Black, or Middle Eastern)
- You have 4 or more of these issues:
- 💓 High blood pressure
- 🩸 High cholesterol
- ❤️🩹 Heart disease
- 😴 Sleep apnoea
- 🍭 Type 2 diabetes
2️⃣ Or you may qualify if:
- Your BMI is 35+ (or 32.5+ for certain ethnic groups)
- You have at least 1 weight-related health problem
- AND you urgently need to lose weight for:
- 🎗️ Cancer treatment
- 🫀 Organ transplant
- 👁️ Vision issues from high brain pressure (IIH)
- ⚙️ A major operation that needs you to lose weight first
- 👶 NHS fertility care
- 🛌 Obesity hypoventilation syndrome (OHS)
🩺 How Do You Get It?
- It’s likely that we will contact eligible patients when the SE London weight loss service opens.
- The service should start in late July.
- You’ll get support too: healthy eating 🥗 and moving more 🏃
🚫 You can’t self-refer. No direct bookings allowed. 📝 Not all GP surgeries offer it yet — a new service is on the way!
